Dex Romweber Duo #1410

Dex Romweber Duo‘s brand new album, Images 13, derives its name from the cover art, an existing piece from Romweber’s own portfolio, although not enumerating the tracks (of which there are 12). Romweber was particularly forthcoming in our conversation, reflecting on his affinity for film noir, working with his friends in music, and how he would frame an autobiographical documentary, in contrast to the cult-favorite, Two Headed Cow. With a decades long career as a guitarist who rips it up every night he performs, Romweber opens up about how both his music changes or stays fixed, his duos evolved, and how he is feeling his age catching up with him, but is grateful to continue making music. He left me wanting to talk with him again.

Lingua Musica Live: Aaron Burdett

Aaron Burdett is a well-known songwriter from Western North Carolina, but lesser-known outside of the region. His most recent album, Fruits Of My Labor, continues his path in the Americana style, fusing blues and bluegrass with with his acoustic folk songs. The result translates well to both full-band and solo performances, such as his recent appearance on Lingua Musica Live.

Lingua Musica: Noah Guthrie

Noah Guthrie found his first audiences through YouTube videos. Recently, he played for our live music partners, Lingua Musica, in Arden, NC (near Asheville). The next public event for Lingua Music is Aaron Burdett on 28 February 2014 — tickets available now.

From Guthrie’s bio:
Coming off an 80+ city college tour, bluesy-pop singer/songwriter, Noah Guthrie, is ready to take the U.S. by storm in 2014 to promote his debut album, Among the Wildest Things. Often known for his unique covers on youtube, Noah is excited to give fans a taste of his own music.

Described as having a Pop/Americana sound blended with soul, this nineteen-year old Southerner co-wrote the majority of his thirteen originals, along with his first single, Call Home. He may have been called the male version of Adele or a mix of John Legend and Dave Matthews in the past, but as his social media username shows, there is Only 1 Noah.

Born and raised in South Carolina, Noah grew up in a home filled with music. Always singing around the house, Noah credits his dad for teaching him to learn his true voice and hone his gift. When he was fourteen, Noah received his first guitar and started writing songs. As a practiced musician on the bass, guitar, and trumpet by the time he was 13, everyone around him knew early on that he had an innate gift, and after his first performance in front of people at age 13, he was already dubbed an ‘old soul’ and true talent. One of his earlier written songs (at 16,) even made the album.

Noah has been steadily building a name for himself in the music business through his live performances and cover videos and currently has over 50 million views on youtube. In May of 2012, Noah experienced the explosion that comes from a viral video when his ultra unique and blues-filled version of LMFAO’s “Sexy And I Know It” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsvlsuLau5c) earned him more than 8 million views in less than a week (now at over 20 million views.) As a result of the internet-mania, Noah was featured on NBC’s Today Show, Jay Leno’s Tonight Show, Dancing With The Stars, and several U.S. and European Radio Stations, and covers of his version have been featured on the US version of The Voice and The X Factor.

Throughout his young career, Noah has opened for a variety of artists as his powerful soulful voice and beautifully written songs appeal to a wide range of audiences. He has led off concerts for Ed Sheeran, Neon Trees, Ben Rector, Cobra Starship, Matisyahu, and Selena Gomez, but it was his performance opening up for Matt Nathanson at Sonoma State University that Noah marks as the most thrilling to date. While Noah’s live performances may be his favorite aspect of being a musician, over the course of the last year, while working on his first album, Noah has grown immensely as an artist. He worked in the studio with Matt Wertz, Gabe Dixon, Josiah Rosen (Augustana), Mher Filian (Selena Gomez), Isaac Hasson (Demi Lovato, Kris Allen, Hot Chelle Rae,) Amy Stroup, Ben Rector amongst others, and continues to collaborate, while simultaneously posting youtube covers.

As a huge fan of Bono and U2, Noah would love to follow in the footsteps of the Rock & Roll icon and find ways to give back through his music. He has previously performed in two Unicef benefit concerts and would love to continue to work with the organization, as well as contribute to the ONE campaign.

Southern Culture On The Skids

Re-record an entire album 20 years later? Yeah, that makes sense if you’re the beloved North Carolina cult-band, SCOTS.

Buy SCOTS music here on Amazon.

From their recent release:

Southern Culture on the Skids has re-recorded every SCOTS original song from 1994’s Ditch Digging and releases Dig This on October 29, 2013 through the band’s own Kudzu Records. Listen & share “Lordy Lordy” and find out why you dug SCOTS in the first place.

Singer/guitarist, Rick Miller recalls the inspiration, “We have a drainage ditch that runs by the Kudzu Ranch that had been left unattended for so long it was not doing its job. I decided to dig a new ditch or at least upgrade the old ditch. I was dragging tree limbs, shoveling the muck, looking for turtles and watching for snakes and humming the riff to “Ditch Digging.” That is when it dawned on me that it had been almost 20 years since we recorded the album of the same name, and all those songs could use an upgrade to 2013 specs just like this ditch I am sweating over right now, but instead of a shovel – I’d use a guitar. Easier on the back!”

Included in all packages, LP, CD and Digital is a free download of karaoke instrumental tracks and lyric sheet. Bassist/vocalist, Mary Huff loves the Karaoke — Marioke as the band calls it — so much that at her request they will be having a karaoke contest. More details will be forthcoming!

The Chapel Hill, NC trio Southern Culture On The Skids has been spreading the rock and roll gospel since 1983. Rick Miller – guitar/vox, Mary Huff – bass/vox and Dave Hartman – drums, play a greasy mix of surf, rockabilly, R&B and country fried garage with a side of psych. It’s a musical gumbo Miller calls, “Americana from the wrong side of the tracks.” For over 30 years, the band have toured everywhere from the NC Prison System to Mt. Fuji, Japan, delivering what Rolling Stone calls “a hell raising rock and roll party.” Other recent releases include 2010’s The Kudzu Ranch and 2011’s Zombified.

On October 1, 2013 Yep Roc released Mondo Zombie Boogaloo, an album and tour celebrating Halloween. The album is a collection of new music from Southern Culture on the Skids plus The Fleshtones and Los Straitjackets. The set includes originals and standards from each band and promises to put listeners in a spooky mood for the Halloween season. SCOTS contributes four original songs: “The Loneliest Ghost In Town,” “Tingler Blues,” “La Marcha De Los Cabarones,” “Demon Death” plus a spellbinding cover of Ronnie Cook’s “Goo Goo Muck.” Mondo Zombie Boogaloo is sure to revive both the living and dead this Halloween.

Southern Culture on the Skids is already prepping for a busy Spring 2014. Yep Roc will release a SCOTS/Fred Schneider collaboration called “Party At My Trouse” B/W “Hey Mary.” The songs were recorded at The Kudzu Ranch and feature a couple unforgettable Mary and Fred duets. Available on 12″ and 7” vinyl, the release will be available for Record Store Day 2014. The Southern Folklife Collection at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will also feature the band’s history and musical contribution through an exhibition of photos, music and artifacts.

6 String Drag

Country Fried Rock alumni, Kenny Roby and Rob Keller, are back together as 6 String Drag, the most under-rated roots rock band from the mid-1990s. After some intriguing reunion shows rounding out 2013, the rumors of a new album turned out to be true. The bones are recorded, and now the glitter needs to be added — rock & roll needs horns, y’all, as Roby says.

Screen Door Porch

One of our earliest features was a great duo/band based in Wyoming with Carolina roots, Screen Door Porch. They’ve got a nifty new video and are on the road regularly, so keep your eyes peeled for them! Sometimes the play full band, sometimes as a duo, but either set-up is great.

Caitlin Cary: NC Music Love Army #1339

Caitlin Cary and Jon Lindsay formed the NC Music Love Army after a long phone conversation inspired by a song quickly written and posted on YouTube by their mutual friend, Django Haskins of The Old Ceremony.  What had started in their state of North Carolina as weekly summertime protests against restrictive state legislation regarding voting rights, gay marriage rights, and women’s health rights, dubbed “Moral Mondays,” made strange bedfellows of disparate causes within a state known for its more progressive outlook than much of the South.  The groups saw their political landscape changing, and took to the streets with their only weapon — songs.  Protest music certainly is not new in America, the South, or even North Carolina, but it’s been over forty years since so many groups came out publicly to share their discontent.  What was borne of passion for these musicians, has become the NC Music Love Army — a movement, an album, and a live show (on Saturday, 30 November 2013 at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC — TIX HERE).
